How Big Should Women’s Pockets Be?
If you have ever tried to sit down with a modern smartphone in your front pocket – on those rare occasions when you actually find pants with pockets that fit a phone at least somehow, you know the exact moment of failure: a sudden, uncomfortable pinch to your hip bone and just discomfort overall. So why does this happen? Is it really because women bodies are not made for pockets?
No, not at all. It is all about how women pockets are constructed compared to men´s pants. So let me explain in more depth.
The High-Waist Mechanics: Why Wide Pockets Fail
Most European high-waisted trousers are designed with shallow, wide pockets that sit horizontally across the upper thigh and hip. Because high-rise cuts elevate the pocket entry point higher on your torso, a shallow pocket forces your phone to sit horizontally right over your pelvic pivot point. Especially because the pocket does not have enough depth to allow your phone to be placed vertically. This makes it uncomfortable to carry any bigger item in your pocket and makes walking or even squatting to tie your shoes almost impossible.
Unlike in men´s pants where the pockets provide enough depth, so their belongings can sit vertically, on their upper thigh area.
While women have complained about pocket sizes for decades, the data proves it isn’t just an illusion. According to a landmark data study by The Pudding analyzing major clothing brands, women’s pockets are on average 48% shorter and 6.5% narrower than men’s pockets. In fact, while 100% of men’s front pockets can comfortably fit a standard smartphone, only 40% of women’s pockets can fit one at all.
Beyond the structural mechanics, this pocket shortage is also rooted in retail economics. Historical design choices, ranging from Christian Dior’s 1954 declaration that women’s pockets exist purely for decoration helped fund a multi-billion-dollar dependency on the global handbag market. So when clothing manufacturers remove functional front pockets, women are forced to rely on external bags just to carry basic daily essentials. And that is a cycle that creates an entirely separate issue around personal safety, independence, and mental load.
But it is not like that everywhere. While traveling through Asia – particularly in Japan, I noticed a huge contrast in garment philosophy. Asian brands like Uniqlo and Muji frequently integrate functional engineering into everyday wear, prioritizing real-world utility without sacrificing a clean silhouette. Yet European apparel brands continue to rely on decorative, shallow slots that fail basic utility tests.
Finding the Magic Number: The 28cm to 32cm Evolution
When engineering our functional trousers at Standard Redesigned, we knew we couldn’t just guess a random depth. We had to test vertical measurements across real daily movements:
We tried pocket depths starting from 28cm and tested them on multiple body types. That´s is how we ended up with our final number, to make sure there is no hip pinching no matter the shape and size of your body.
A 32cm vertical pocket allows modern smartphones, keys, and cardholders to drop completely below the hip pivot point. Instead of sitting horizontally across your joint, your essentials rest vertically along your upper thigh, moving naturally with your body rather than against it.
