We Surveyed 100 Women About Their Pants.
Here Is What Brands Are Getting Wrong.
It is one thing to read online articles about the historical lack of pockets in women’s clothing and or see people complaining about women´s pockets being a joke on social media.
It is another thing entirely to ask women in depth what they experience every single time they try to buy a pair of trousers and let them openly share their struggles.
Driven by my own frustration of having tiny pockets and always having to carry a purse, I decided to run community surveys on Reddit.
I wanted to know: Am I the only one who feels this way, or is the apparel market actively failing us?
Not only were my pocket concerns confirmed, but the responses revealed other common issues in modern women’s clothing design: ranging from severe waist gapping to thin, cheap fabrics that wear out in months or inconsistent sizing.
The Survey Data: What Women Struggle with When Shopping
When asking women about their biggest struggles when shopping for pants, 75% of all respondents reported a primary pocket failure: dealing with front pockets that are completely missing, sewn shut, or far too shallow to hold a basic smartphone.
We asked 101 women: What are your biggest issues when shopping for pants? (select all that apply)
Fake or Non-Existent Pockets: 66%
Pockets Too Small to Be Usable: 58%
Poor Quality Fabric (thin, wears out fast): 60%
Waist Gapping (waist too big, hips/thighs fit fine): 49%
Expensive but Not Worth the Price: 46%
Hard to Find a Good Fit for Body Shape: 40%
Uncomfortable or Stiff Fabric: 35%
When asked in an open-ended format to state the #1 thing they wish apparel brands would fix, women overwhelmingly wrote back a single word: Pockets.
What Women Want vs. How We Engineered It
